Is it for me?

Think everything through

First of all you need to think about what kind of job and in turn what Apprenticeship you would like to do, the right type of job depends on a number of factors:

  • your personality
  • your interests and hobbies
  • your talents and skills

For example if you enjoy working outdoors you might want to consider an Apprenticeship that would enable you to do this.  Make sure you take time to think everything through. Talk to people you know, or try a careers adviser. It's not just about seeing what Apprenticeships are out there and then randomly picking one.

Try contacting companies direct to get some work experience to see first hand what the job would entail. Work experience is always valuable when applying for an Apprenticeship and can improve your chances of being successful, as well as giving you the opportunity to find out more about the area of work you’re interested in.

The qualities you need

An Apprenticeships is not the easy option, there is an element of commitment expected from you. You will have to be prepared to give to one, two or even five years of training and further study, depending on what Apprenticeship you decide to do.

To get a sought after Apprenticeship place, you’ll have to show you are committed, and aware of your responsibilities to both yourself and the company who would employ you. You also need to be happy to work as both part of a team and individually, and be able to use your own initiative.
