Building Services Engineers Apprenticeship - Construction
Apprentices work to create and maintain comfortable, energy-efficient and safe environments within a building. Heating, ventilation, refrigeration, lighting and power, plumbing, drainage, fire protection and even acoustics are all the responsibility of the building services engineer.
The vast majority of businesses in this sector are micro-businesses and 'one-man-bands' and the majority of them were started by individuals who trained as apprentices in the sector.
Much of the money generated by this sector comes from areas such as planned maintenance and fast track construction, from combined heat and power to the installation of gas turbines and data cabling on cross channel ferries.
The sector is currently experiencing a mini-boom at the same time as it is experiencing a skills shortage.
The Skills Council for this sector is SummitSkills, covering the electrotechnical, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration and plumbing industries. For more information, visit: www.summitskills.org.uk
If you are under 19 and thinking about taking up an Apprenticeship, you may want to discuss the details with a Connexions Personal Adviser. You can also go to ‘What next?’ to get in touch with someone who can help with your query.
Alternatively, if you are over 19 years of age you can contact your local Jobcentre Plus for additional help and advice. For more information, visit http://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk
