Apprenticeship Awards 2007
December Launch Event
Finalist, Apprentice of the Year category
Andrew Bristow
Andrew started his Apprenticeship in Customer Service at Mecca Bingo in 2004. He had worked there during his teens, and after returning to home after working abroad as a holiday rep, decided to take charge of his life and get qualifications that would give him the opportunity to drive forward his career.
After many months of hard work as a Customer Service Assistant, Andrew proved himself as a diligent worker and was promoted to Customer Service Supervisor – a role that was totally new to him but one that provided him with the opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities.
He was keen to make a discernible difference to the running of the operation, and identified the key areas for improvement as: income, staff development and team work. Andrew recognised that the encouragement and development of the staff was of particular importance as without this customer service and income streams could be compromised, meaning that the business would not function as effectively.
Having identified areas for improvement, he went on to deliver new procedures, new bingo callers, revised targets, improved service and – most importantly – focussed on developing staff. The results of these new implementations have been tangible and measurable – not only did the income of the business increase, but this resulted in the department being promoted from Division Three to Division Two in the North-West income stream.
Andrew has enjoyed rising to the challenge of completing his Apprenticeship and proving himself and is delighted to now be helping other students do the same, providing a form of mentoring for them.
Andrew’s assessor, Margaret Hargreaves, shows great pride in his achievements and has said that he consistently demonstrates “outstanding commitment and enthusiasm for his studying and qualification, as well as determination to succeed in his career.”
Andrew himself has said that this Apprenticeship has given him the chance to succeed and by “completing this qualification it gave me the drive, willingness and belief that I could do anything”.
