Personal Achiever of the Year Award

Shaun Anderson

Shaun, 25, is a great example of how one can succeed despite major setbacks. He initially left school without any GCSEs and had low self esteem. Unable to decide which direction he wanted his career to take, Shaun moved through a variety of casual jobs and eventually found a role as an electrician’s mate.

Shaun was enjoying his role but soon realised that something was missing. At 22, he decided to return to college, where he began his Electrotechnical Advanced Apprenticeship.

Shortly after beginning his Apprenticeship, Shaun was sentenced to six months imprisonment for affray due to alcohol consumption. Determination and perseverance enabled Shaun to keep up to date with his work while he was incarcerated. His tutors at Hull College sent him the relevant books and assignments he needed to stay on top of his Apprenticeship, meaning that when was released he was able to get a new job.

Shaun says: ‘Initially I thought that all my efforts had gone to waste but I have managed to overcome my earlier failings, and have set myself new targets for the future.

‘My training has provided me with so many opportunities and I’m flattered that fellow apprentices turn to me for advice and support.’

Dave Stuart, senior trainer consultant at Hull College, is delighted with Shaun’s progress and says: ‘Shaun has shown great willpower in difficult times. He has continued to work extremely hard and is on track to complete his Apprenticeship one year earlier than expected.

‘Shaun’s performance and achievement on his Apprenticeship have confirmed that it was worth supporting Shaun through his difficulties. He has exceeded expectations, and been an example to others of how hard work and commitment can enable you to achieve your goals.’

Shaun has recently started his Level 4 Apprenticeship with Wally Mays Electrical Ltd, Hull. He is set to complete this programme on the 2nd July when he will then be a qualified electrician.

Shaun Anderson is a finalist in the Personal Achiever category at the national Apprenticeship Awards 2007.
