Gareth Moor has flourished thanks to his Apprenticeship, and was promoted to Site Foreman an impressive two years into his training. Gareth, 23, began his Advanced Apprenticeship in Electrical Engineering in September 2003, and instantly became a crucial member of Dougal and Railton’s team.
Gareth’s main role involves learning the trade through working on site as a team member, whilst studying for his qualifications.
Gareth says: ‘One of the main benefits of doing an Apprenticeship has been the ongoing training I have received at college and at work.
‘Being continually exposed to different teams and varying projects at work has taught me much more than I would have learnt if I didn’t have on the job training. It has allowed me to quickly gain good communication skills, and develop working relationships with colleagues at all levels of the company.’
Chris Burt, director of Dougal and Railton, says: ’Gareth has shown tremendous promise whilst working with us. He has been involved in major projects for the company, where he has had important roles of responsibility, and truly demonstrated the benefits of training on the job.
‘He is a valuable asset to our team and has really benefited from his Apprenticeship. He has developed as an individual and has even managed his own project, as a site foreman, which he did to a very high standard.’
This view is firmly endorsed by Mike Dunn, Contracts Manager at Tolent Construction who said: ‘It was such a pleasure to work with Gareth that we will insist he is put in charge of our next installation project with Dougal and Railton,’
Steve Cunningham, review officer from Gateshead College says: “Gareth has excelled through his training, gaining the respect of his colleagues, and has really impressed his team. He is an example to all apprentices and has already been crowned Gateshead College Apprentice of the Year 2006.”
Gareth is currently working towards a degree in Building Services Engineering at Northumbria University.
Gareth Moor is a finalist in the Advanced Apprentice of the Year category at the national Apprenticeship Awards 2007.
