Apprentice of the Year Award

Christopher Gary Taylor

21 year old Christopher began his Painting and Decorating Apprenticeship with Dave Luck Ltd in February 2004. His eagerness and determination did not go unnoticed by his employer, and within a few months of completing his Apprenticeship, three and half months early, he was promoted to site foreman.

He has worked extremely hard and has earned himself the much deserved respect of the main contractors, as well as his staff. He has built up a good rapport with his team and demonstrated they can deliver ahead of schedule, which has resulted in an increase in repeat business for the company.

Christopher has enjoyed the challenge, and is delighted with the outcome of Apprenticeship: ‘My Apprenticeship has helped me become more confident and knowledgeable within my field. It has been such an achievement for me to reach a stage where I can supervise staff, meet deadlines, produce work of a high standard, and train and develop other apprentices.

‘It is great being able to offer an individual, in a similar position as I started out, the support they need to develop. Assuming the role of foreman at such a young age has boosted my confidence, and helped me to improve my communication, team work and leadership skills.’

Denise Luck, director of Dave Luck Ltd adds: ‘Christopher is such an asset to the company and has hit the ground running. Not only does he undertake duties such as supervising staff, enforcing the company’s Health and Safety policy, ordering materials and liaising with customers, he has also had a huge impact on customer retention and bringing in new business through word of mouth.

‘The rest of the team have reacted very well to his promotion and he seems to have an excellent management style that has resulted in lower staff absenteeism.’

Dave Luck Ltd was a finalist in Small Employer of the Year category at last year’s Apprenticeship Awards, proof of the Company’s outstanding commitment to Apprenticeships.

Christopher Gary Taylor is a finalist in the Apprentice of the Year category in the national Apprenticeship Awards 2007.
