David is a member of a 15-strong team in the drawing office of East Lancashire Coachbuilders, working to tight timescales to get materials ordered and drawings released for manufacture.
He is also a key member of the design and development team which was established to look at future designs of the PSV and HGV range of vehicles. He is one of just three engineers on this team and was specifically brought in to provide drawing expertise, inspiration and a young person’s outlook.
David is also part of the team involved in implementing the company’s lean manufacturing project and plays the role of the ‘disciple’ for the drawing office. This entails educating other departments about the benefits of improving methods and systems. In the first month of operation, the team managed to save the company a massive £1500.
Being a key member of so many integral teams has provided David with a very solid overview of the company’s operational systems which he uses to help with his role as mentor for three new apprentices in the company. He has tried to become an inspirational role model for these apprentices and enjoys investing in their progress.
David should rightly feel proud of his achievements – not only was his current role created specifically for him based on his drive and commitment to the department, but he has also won the bodywork section of the Northern Vehicle Body Builder Craft Competition.
Joe McDowell of East Lancashire Coachbuilders commented that: “David is a critical member of our workforce, having gained all-round experience in a variety of departments within the company. We see him very much as the future of the business due to his youth, commitment, and determination to succeed. Because of this, we have trusted him with a great deal of responsibility.”
David himself has said that “My Apprenticeship has made me realise how much I have to offer a company in terms of skills, enthusiasm, drive and commitment. East Lancashire Coachbuilders have put their faith in me since day one, which has inspired me to rise to, and exceed, the challenges set.”
