Young Apprentice of the Year Award

Sarah Venus

Sarah’s Young Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care has entailed a wide variety of work placements, including physiotherapy, child care, residential care, hospital ward duties, and entertaining the elderly.

“I was motivated to start my Young Apprenticeship by the chance to achieve a better understanding of myself and the world I live in.”

Sarah feels she has benefited both professionally and personally by her experiences: “I’ve learnt how vital confidentiality issues are; respecting people’s dignity, understanding and dealing with people with challenging behaviour, and more understanding of discrimination.”

Sarah continues, “I feel that this whole experience has made me into a better person and a more mature, confident individual. The skills I have learned throughout will be vital in further education, and more broadly in dealing with life issues.”

Sarah intends to use her Young Apprenticeship as a springboard into further education, either within the Armed Forces’ health care system or a university course in physiotherapy.

She was awarded the STEPS Young Apprentice of the Year 2005 in recognition for her achievements, positive attitude and motivation throughout the first year of her Young Apprenticeship. Sarah has also been short-listed for the Young Apprentice category in the national Apprenticeship Awards 2006
