Pharmacy Technicians and Assistants
This Apprenticeship is for anyone interested in working in a pharmacy as a technician or assistant. Pharmacy technicians and assistants prepare, supply and dispense medicines and products prescribed for patients under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. While most of them work in community pharmacies, some work in the hospital pharmacy service.
As an apprentice, you’ll be working as a dispensing and pharmacy assistant and undertaking a variety of supervised tasks within the pharmacy. Your duties will vary depending on the setting, but may include selling over-the-counter medicines, collecting prescriptions, generating labels, ordering and storing pharmaceutical stock, and providing information on symptoms and products to customers.
On the Advanced Apprenticeship, you’ll support the pharmacist as a pharmacy technician. You’ll dispense medicines and products, provide information and advice, and control stocks of pharmaceutical materials. Maintaining records of patient prescriptions and stock ordering are often carried out with computerised systems, so you’ll need good IT skills.
Communication skills are also essential, as pharmacy technicians have a lot of contact with the public and often provide advice and information on medicines.
Completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship would help you to progress with your career.
