Paper and Board Manufacturing

Paper and Board Manufacturing

This Apprenticeship deals with a major section of the UK paper making industry, which is among one of the most forward thinking industries in the areas of recycling, energy conservation and the environment. Paper and board manufacture is responsible for making things like books, newspapers, money, packaging and hygiene products.

As an apprentice, you could be working in a paper mill or a recovery plant making paper or corrugated board and tissue from wood pulp and recycled materials. On this Apprenticeship, you’ll learn how to operate papermaking equipment; carry out basic testing and sampling for quality; packaging; and some finishing operations.

The Advanced Apprenticeship has two routes of specialisation: process engineering, which deals with operating more complex machinery and improving workflow; and process operations, which focuses on leading a specific part of the process, possibly in the role of a team leader. You might also learn some engineering skills and carry out maintenance on machines, or learn how to effectively respond to any problems that may come up – and keep production processes going.
