Types of Apprenticeships

Laboratory and Science Technicians

laboratory

This Apprenticeship is for anyone interested in working in a laboratory setting. Laboratory technicians support scientists and help carry out tests, research and investigations. They work across many industries and can be involved in activities ranging from developing new products and diagnosing diseases to measuring pollution levels.

As an apprentice, you’ll train as a junior laboratory technician and learn practical scientific skills. The nature of your work will depend on your employer, but whether you work for a pharmaceutical company or a university, you’ll probably be part of a team of other scientists and technicians. You might help collect and analyse samples; prepare cultures or specimens; set up experiments; and record and present data. You might also be responsible for ordering and controlling laboratory stock and supplies, and making sure laboratory equipment is clean and in good working order.

During your Apprenticeship you’ll learn about the fundamentals of science, pick up practical skills and take a qualification in applied science.

Completion of the Advanced Level Apprenticeship could lead to further qualifications or Higher Education. Once qualified, you might find yourself working in a research laboratory, hospital laboratory, environmental science laboratory, or laboratory within an educational establishment.
