Types of Apprenticeships

Combined Manufacturing Processes

This Apprenticeship deals with a major section of the UK paper making industry, which is among one of the most forward thinking industries in the areas of recycling, energy conservation and the environment. The Paper industry is of importance to other industries, either as an important part of the supply chain or as a supplier of end products and it makes a substantial contribution to the UK economy.

Manufacturing and conversion processes are a major part of the Paper industries work. Paper and Board manufacture is a global industry which produces a large number of products such as; books, newspapers, money, tracing paper, filters, roofing felt, packaging board, wallpaper, tissue paper, disposable nappies and healthcare products.

As an Intermediate Level apprentice, you could be working in a paper mill or a recovery plant making paper or corrugated board and tissue from wood pulp and recycled materials. On this Apprenticeship, you’ll learn how to operate papermaking equipment; carry out basic testing and sampling for quality; packaging; and some finishing operations.

For example you could work as a Stock Preparation/Raw Materials/De-ink Operative, using equipment to transform raw materials, recycled paper and wood pulp into liquid stock, needed to make paper. Or you could work as a Winder Operative, unwinding, modifying and rewinding paper and board.

The Advanced Apprenticeship has two routes of specialisation: process engineering, which deals with operating more complex machinery and improving workflow; and process operations, which focuses on leading a specific part of the process, possibly in the role of a team leader. You might also learn some engineering skills and carry out maintenance on machines, or learn how to effectively respond to any problems that may come up – and keep production processes going.

For example you could work as a Paper Making Supervisor, leading the activity of a team of operators; helping to schedule production, setting work schedules, providing training and coaching, conducting performance evaluations and helping set departmental goals and expectations. Or you could work as a Paper/Product Technologist, ensuring that the paper or board is produced efficiently and that the correct amount is produced at the right cost and at the right level of quality.
