Fit for the future

29 October 2010

ImageBiddick School Sports College (BSSC) in Sunderland has helped dozens of unemployed youngsters to be fit for work with the help of the Apprenticeship programme.

The college appointed its very first apprentice, Richard Lothian, from Washington in 2003. Joining as a member of staff in the PE department, Richard, who is now 23, trained via an Apprenticeship in Sport Management and Coaching.

After completing his Apprenticeship, Richard went on to complete a higher level qualification in Leisure Management at BSSC, which saw him promoted to the position of Sport and Wellness Consultant. As part of his ongoing personal development, Richard has recently started a full time Sport and Exercise degree course at Sunderland University.

Since Richard, BSSC has gone on to train a whole host of youngsters, including 10 via Advanced Apprenticeships and 120 via Young Apprenticeship programmes. Many were not in education, employment or training (NEET) before starting the programme but have blossomed as a result of the tailored support.
