Securing an Apprenticeship at age 16 in Medical Engineering has helped Michael Crowe to kick start his career. As a result the 20 year old from South Tyneside has a worthwhile job and a string of extra qualifications.

Progression

Michael’s role at South Tyneside District Hospital involves the repair and maintenance of life saving equipment such as ventilators, anaesthetic machines, neonatal incubators and other diagnostic medical equipment. To add to his skills and knowledge, he has also completed training courses in telecommunications and is working towards a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Northumbria University.

Competence

Thanks to his positive attitude and ongoing training, Michael is able to understand and communicate complex technical and medical information to nursing staff and senior consultants, often in emotional environments due to terminally ill patients.

Michael Cox, Head of Biomedical Engineering , South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust said: “During his time as an apprentice, Michael has applied himself diligently to his studies and his work and has always achieved what he has set his sights on. His skills have brought extra resource to an already busy department operating at times under extreme pressure.”

Invaluable skills

As well as supporting medical professionals, Michael’s new found skills are put into practice for the benefit of the patients too.

Ongoing learning

To help keep his skills and knowledge right up to date, Michael understands the value and importance of ongoing learning.

“I will never lose my enthusiasm for learning. Due to the technological advancements in the healthcare profession, I hope to be constantly at the forefront of cutting edge development.” said Michael Crow.

Awards

As testament to his commitment to learning and work, Michael recently made it through to the finals of the prestigious National Apprenticeship Awards in London, where he was highly commended. He was also named Apprentice of the Year by his training provider, the Northern and Yorkshire NHS Assessment Centre.
