Nottingham City Homes

Nottingham City Homes has over 375 craft workers maintaining 29,000 council houses for Nottingham City Council. They believe the right training is at the heart of maintaining their company mission statement “to deliver an excellent service”.

The company invests heavily in apprentice training and development because they know it will help to achieve their vision of ‘homes and places people want to live’. Mark Johnson, Director of Property Services, said: “We are not only looking to train an excellent plumber or bricklayer but a great all rounder who is a competent craftsman and an ambassador for Nottingham City Homes."

“We’ve had a 100% retention level in our apprentice recruitment for the past two years and up-skilling our workforce has produced well qualified and loyal members of the team. One of our apprentices went on to take an MBA and has now secured his position as a senior manager within the company. Another was also successful in achieving the Nottinghamshire Plumbing Apprentice of the Year Award in 2006.”

The scheme has been operating for over 23 years and the company currently has 21 people on their Apprenticeship programme, all of whom have their own mentor who supports them throughout their training from start to finish.

Stephenson College has worked closely with Nottingham City Homes for some time. Linda Howard, Centre Manager said: “The commitment to training has always been over and above what we could expect. Nottingham City Homes are very proactive and are always prepared to go the extra mile by supporting their apprentices 100 per cent.”

Mark added: “All our apprentices are committed to the company, their training and their development. With an Apprenticeship programme such as this, they are able to immerse themselves in the company ethos from day one and really get to grips with what’s required and how things work. As their experience and skills base develops, their careers can also grow with the company and this I believe has been at the core of our winning formula for the last 23 years.”
