Advanced Level Apprentice - Jacob Stimpson

Jacob Stimpson

When I originally left school, I wanted to go to university. I instead opted for an Apprenticeship and have never looked back.

“We have an excellent Apprenticeship scheme applying very high standards, but once in a while an apprentice comes along who is extra special and goes that extra mile.”

Jacob Stimpson, 26, completed his Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Boat Building and Maintenance with Princess Yachts International in Plymouth. Finishing in just under three years, Jacob has shown not only a high level of workmanship, but also dedication and commitment to his chosen career.

Jacob says: “Since joining Princess, I have really started to enjoy my trade and I feel like I’ve grown into my role by gaining valuable experience and training. As an apprentice I feel that I have already achieved and gained a vast knowledge of the company, from working on different boat lines to completing warranty work.”

Jacob has seized every opportunity that has come his way on his Apprenticeship. In just his second year, he was selected to build a key part of a boat on his own. This task enabled Jacob to show his ability and tenacity by completing the job on time and on budget.

Jacob says: “During my Apprenticeship, I made health and safety equipment, such as access ramps, which led to a safer working environment. I have also highlighted areas in the master cabin to be redesigned, which has ultimately saved the company time and money.”

After proving his superior level of workmanship, Jacob was trusted to represent the company abroad by working solo on Princess Yachts around the world – a first for a third-year apprentice.

Jacob says: "When I originally left school, I wanted to go to university. I instead opted for an Apprenticeship and have never looked back. I got paid to learn and finished with a job and skills that I can use anywhere in the world."

“I am very proud of my accomplishments as an apprentice and being given the opportunity to work abroad. I am hard working and put 100% into everything I do. I now mentor an apprentice, sharing my tips and techniques, and I hope he’ll benefit from his Apprenticeship as much as I have from mine.

Throughout the course of his Apprenticeship, Jacob has won several awards within the Princess organization.

Diane Ekland, Training Manager for Princess Yachts International, says that it was Jacob’s passion and drive that has made him such an accomplished worker: “Jacob is a shining example of someone who wanted to succeed from day one. He is a brilliant ambassador for Princess and we are very proud of his achievements as an apprentice.”

Having now finished his Apprenticeship but convinced of the benefits of continuing his studies, Jacob is working towards a Team Leader certificate.

Jacob says: “I feel that I have found my chosen profession and am proud to work for the company. I don’t plan on stopping here, which is reflected in the management development programme I have undertaken. I know there is still a lot of work to be done and I would like to think that this is my next step towards succeeding in this business.”

Jacob was a finalist in the Advanced Level Apprentice of the Year category at the 2008 National Apprenticeship Awards.
