Sellafield Ltd has 200 apprentices within its 5000 strong workforce, and works alongside training provider GENII to develop and deliver its apprentice training provision.
Sellafield has an outstanding history of recruiting apprentices dating back more than six decades, and it sees them as a vital resource to ensure the continued supply of qualified personnel to undertake complex operations and reduce skills gaps.
The Apprenticeship programme at Sellafield has close links with local schools, and operates an ambassador’s scheme to encourage learners to participate in the programme. Sellafield also works closely with the National Skills Academy for Nuclear and is a founder member of Energus, the new nuclear training facility in west Cumbria.
All Sellafield apprentices receive industry-focused training in addition to the Apprenticeship framework and have access to a wide-ranging programme of support including: a residential activity week; social awareness courses such as finance, road awareness and drug and alcohol awareness; a confidential welfare service; additional academic support if required; opportunities to progress to further and higher education, and many more.
In 2007/8, 98% of Sellafield apprentices successfully completed their training, all of whom went on to secure full-time employment with the company, many progressing to managerial positions. In addition to its own Apprenticeships, Sellafield sponsors more than 100 community apprentices, the majority of whom progress into employment with local businesses, enhancing the skills base in west Cumbria.
