Princess Yachts International plc

Apprenticeship Awards 2009 Finalist

Name: Princess Yachts

Apprenticeship Award: Large Employer

The luxury yacht manufacturer restarted its Apprenticeship programme in 2006 due to an ageing workforce resulting in skills shortages. Today Apprenticeships are at the heart of their training and skills growth strategy. Princess Yachts have 65 apprentices at any time employed through a breadth of Apprenticeships covering carpentry, laminating, engineering and accountancy.

In 2008, in partnership with City College Plymouth, Princess Yachts opened their training centre for carpentry apprentice training. Reaching out into the local community they encourage their apprentices to act as mentors to young people on programmes such as school’s work experience programmes and ambassadors to the new Diploma in engineering and manufacturing.

Diane Eckland, Health , Safety and Training Manager says: “The company is absolutely delighted to be selected as one of three large companies nationally, to be recognised for its achievements of our Apprenticeship programme in the National final of the LSC Apprenticeship Awards.

Our Apprenticeship is one of choice, we offer great support, one to one mentoring, and skills passed on for life in areas where there are skills shortages. Our retention rates, awards and certificates the apprentices gain are second to none. It is an accolade to them and our staff that we find ourselves in this final.”
